Have you ever wondered what walking on the moon feels like? If yes, a travel to the Dune du Pilat at the Atlantic coast in Southern France probably gives you the most similar experience that you can get without without paying the extraordinary prices for space tourism. And for all those who never dreamt about stepping in the footsteps of Neil Armstrong: The Dune du Pyla is worth a visit anyhow. Some facts: With 110 meters, it is the highest dune in Europe. About 60 million cubic meters of sand occupy 2,7 kilometers of the french coast.

The place is magical

Standing on the top of the dune, the atlantic ocean stretches to one side and the mediterranean french province Landes stretches to the other side offering one of the most beautiful sights in Southern France. Word has spread on the magic of this place: 1 million tourists visit the dune every year.

If you plan a longer stay in the area, staying at the seaside resort of Pyla sur Mer is a good option. The resort is located right north of the dune.

A fun fact: The proximity of the names has let to a lot of confusion about the name of the dune. Therefore, on the road visitors find alternating road signs with “Dune du Pilat” and “Dune du Pyla”.
